As the end of SharePoint Server 2010 support approaches, you should take advantage of opportunities and understand what your options are.
What does the end of support for a product mean?
The end of SharePoint Server 2010, and SharePoint Foundation 2010 software support means that Microsoft no longer provides:
- Technical support.
- Bug fixes even for issues that may impact the stability and usability of the server.
- Security fixes for vulnerabilities that are discovered.
- Time zone updates.
- Operating systems supporting SharePoint Server 2010 are also reaching or already reached end of support.
So, what does this mean for a company that is still running SharePoint 2010? Microsoft is simply phasing out from extended support for SharePoint 2010. Nothing shuts down or stops working, however, you will not be able to request changes to product design and features for SharePoint 2010. Any claims you could make about defects with the product under the terms of their warranty will no longer be honored after that. In addition to that, your server will be vulnerable to security breaches because Microsoft will not provide security fixes after its ‘Retirement’. Maintaining aged hardware along with expired technologies (Operating system, system software’s) will not be an easy job.
